When we first dreamed up our blog, one of the main reasons why we thought it would be a good idea to create one was so we could have a home for our creative, DIY projects. We haven’t had the space and resources to dig deeper into our DIY souls this past year due to our big move to Wisconsin and then back to Virginia, but we are happy to say that we do now! And since it is now officially a new year and decade, we thought what better way to start 2020 than with a DIY post.
So here is a step-by-step basic guide on how we built two industrial benches to add to our new dining table. But whatever your reason is for wanting a bench in your home, whether it’s for your entryway, bedroom, dining table, patio, etc. here is what you can do to make that happen.
Here are the materials and supplies we used as well as the steps we took to create our industrial benches:
Materials:
- Full tree log (5 foot section of tree)
- Screws
- 2 — 1/2 inch black pipe (12 inches long)
- 4 — 1/2 inch black pipe (5 inches long)
- 2 — 1/2 inch black pipe T
- 2 — 1/2 inch black pipe flange
- 4 — 1/2 inch black pipe caps
Supplies:
- Chainsaw
- Planer
- Belt sander
- Orbital sander
- Drill
- Hole saw 3-inch
Step 1: Cut the log in half.
Step 2: Plane the flat surfaces of the log.
Step 3: Sand the log.
Step 4: Drill holes in the log.
Step 5: Secure flanges to the log.
Step 5: Attach pipes.
Step 6: Stain the bench.
We used a walnut stain on both benches that we made. They both looked really different in color though. This is probably because we actually mixed the stain before painting it on for the first bench and then didn’t for the second one we did. So just be aware of that if you plan on making more than one.
If you do end up making a bench like this, let us know below! We would love to be a part of your journey!
