Healthy Snacks You Won’t Feel Guilty Munching On During A Road Trip

07.15.19

Healthy Snacks for a Road TripOh, munchies, you gotta love them. That is until you feel yucky after only eating chips, cookies, candy and drinking carbonated sodas all day. We know this from experience and if you’re a huge snack lover like us then you know the kind of snack “hangover” we are talking about, too.

When we left from Virginia to start our lives here in Milwaukee, WI, we had a 12-hour road trip ahead of us that we ended up splitting in two days. Our loving family and friends made sure we were stocked with snacks and boy, were we. It was all the goodies you could think of from gummies to iced tea, but there was no way the two of us could get through all that. We still have the remnants in our snack basket today. Seriously, come over and have some!

So since we headed on a recent road trip to Ohio for Begad’s cousin’s wedding, we thought we would share what yummy, healthy snacks we took with us on the road.

Snack Bag Road Trip Food

Here are the snacks we packed with us:

Fresh veggies:

Sliced cucumbers, baby carrots, mini sweet peppers are all good contenders for a road trip. It makes for guilt-free snacking and a healthy alternative to chips. All of these veggies have that crunch factor that chips do but with added benefits. We sliced up some baby cukes and put them in a stasher bag. We did this too on a mini road trip for the 4th of July and stuffed them in our YETI cooler and they stayed cool and fresh the whole day.

Fresh fruits:

Not sure why we haven’t done this before, but it’s pretty easy to grab a couple fresh fruits and eat them on the road without creating a mess. You can buy a bag of grapes, slice some apples to pair with peanut butter, get a couple of bananas…the possibilities are endless, it just takes a little planning.

Road Trip Snacks Healthy

PopCorners:

If you’re normally a chip person, it’s difficult to cut out chips altogether and luckily, there are plenty of healthier alternatives that will still leave you satisfied. We came across PopCorners and the kettle corn flavor has the perfect balance of sweet and salty. You still feel like you’re eating chips but it’s low-calorie and there are only 4 ingredients that you can actually pronounce!

Salma crackers:

These crackers will change how you do “avocado toast” but since we’re talking about road trip foods, we’ll save that for another day. Salma crackers are corn crackers that are super thin, crunchy and are only 70 calories for a pack of three. You can get Justin’s peanut butter or hummus and spread them on top of the crackers for a more filling snack or you can prepare some cheese and Turkey slices and make a mini sandwich of sorts. You can also eat them plain. They’ll taste like tortilla chips 🌽

Cure bars:

Our apartment is always stocked with cure bars and we really should be eating them more often than we do. They taste better than granola bars and have minimal ingredients. It’s perfect for on-the-go snacking.

Bobo’s bars:

These are the other bars we love. We discovered them at a High Sierra store and now we can’t get enough of them. If you’re ever craving a cookie, eat a Bobo’s bar instead. It does have more calories per serving than everything else we’ve mentioned so far, but the ingredients are better for you than the average chocolate chip cookie. They have lots of flavors to choose from too. Our favorites so far are the lemon poppy seed and the apple pie.

Dried fruit & nuts:

We packed some medjool dates, dried organic mango slices and raw cashews for our trip. You get good protein from healthy nuts which will keep you feeling more full on your trip. We threw all these in a stasher sandwich bag which made it easy for us to munch on. But you can literally throw your favorite nuts and dried fruits in a bag and you’ll be ready to go.

Beef sticks & jerky:

We always like to make sure we have a source of protein with us and jerky, beef sticks make the perfect solution. With us being in Wisconsin now, it’s easy for us to get our hands on some yummy beef sticks, but most gas stations everywhere in the U.S. carry them as well as jerky.

Healthy Drinks Coconut Water Juiced

Drinks:

We don’t like to drink too much on road trips to lessen the amount of bathroom breaks we have to take but we’ve learned to stick with water, coconut water or Juiced instead of that large McDonald’s sweet tea. That way we are hydrated from the water and energized from the juiced fruits and veggies.
